The best time to visit Turkey is April–May or September–October. Weather, sea, crowds and prices for Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast, month by month.
The best time to visit Turkey is April to May and September to October. Istanbul is comfortable for walking, Cappadocia has mild mornings for balloon flights, and the coast is warm without the July–August heat, crowds and peak prices. If your trip is mostly about beaches, go from June to September, when the Aegean and Mediterranean are properly warm.
Turkey (Türkiye) is a big country with very different climates. Istanbul, Cappadocia in central Anatolia, and the coast around Antalya, Fethiye and Bodrum can feel like three separate trips. Here's how the year breaks down for each.
Best month to visit Turkey: the short answer
- Best all-round: May and late September to early October. Warm days, swimmable sea in the south, and manageable crowds.
- Best for Istanbul: April–May and September–November. Cool enough to walk the old city all day.
- Best for beaches: June to September, with the sea often still warm into October.
- Cheapest: November to March, outside holiday dates. Many coastal resorts close, but Istanbul and Cappadocia stay open.
- Avoid if you can: mid-July to August if you dislike heat and crowds, and major holiday weeks if you want quiet roads and cheap domestic flights.
Turkey month by month
Spring (March–May)
March is still cool and changeable, especially inland. By April, Istanbul's parks fill with flowers. The city's tulip displays around Emirgan Park and Gülhane Park are a spring highlight. May is close to perfect almost everywhere: green hills in Cappadocia, warm days on the coast and long evenings. The sea is still cool for most swimmers until late May or June.
Summer (June–August)
June is a sweet spot for a mixed trip: warm sea, long days, and crowds that haven't peaked yet. July and August are hot. Istanbul is often around 30 °C and humid, while Antalya and the southern coast regularly go well above that. This is peak season for resorts, boat trips and Turkish families on holiday, so prices are at their highest. Plan sightseeing like Ephesus and Pamukkale for early morning, when it's cooler and quieter.
Autumn (September–November)
September and October are arguably the best months to visit Turkey. The sea is at its warmest in early autumn, the heat eases, and crowds thin out after the school holidays. Turkey in October is excellent for Istanbul and Cappadocia, and still good for swimming on the Mediterranean coast in the first half of the month. By November, expect cooler, wetter days and quieter resorts.
Winter (December–February)
Istanbul is cool, often grey and rainy, with the odd snowy day. That said, it's a good time for museums, hammams, long breakfasts and lower hotel prices. Cappadocia can be cold and snowy, which makes the fairy chimneys look magical but brings more cancelled balloon flights. Eastern Turkey gets very cold. On the coast, many smaller hotels, beach clubs and boat trips close until spring. Antalya stays more active than places like Bodrum or Kaş.
Best time to visit Cappadocia
The best time to visit Cappadocia is April to June and September to October. Mornings are mild, the valleys are good for hiking, and the light is beautiful at sunrise.
Hot-air balloons fly year-round, but only when the wind allows. Flights are cancelled fairly often, especially in winter. Book your balloon for your first morning so you have spare mornings if it's called off. Balloon prices change a lot by season and demand, so compare a few licensed operators and check what's included.
Summer days in Cappadocia are hot, but nights are cooler than on the coast. Winter brings snow and freezing mornings. Pack proper layers if you go between December and February.
Best time for Istanbul and the coast
- Istanbul: April–May and September–November. Ferries on the Bosphorus are a joy on a mild day, and queues at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı are shorter outside summer. See our 3 days in Istanbul itinerary for a ready-made plan.
- Antalya and the Turquoise Coast (Kaş, Fethiye, Ölüdeniz): May to October. The longest beach season in the country.
- Bodrum and the Aegean: June to September for beaches and nightlife; May and October for a calmer trip.
- Ephesus and Pamukkale: spring and autumn. There's little shade at either site, so summer midday heat can be tough.
Holidays and Ramadan
Two religious holidays matter most for planning: Ramazan Bayramı (Eid al-Fitr) at the end of Ramadan, and Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha). Both follow the Islamic calendar, so the dates move about 11 days earlier each year. During these holidays, domestic flights, buses and coastal hotels fill fast, and prices rise.
Travelling during Ramadan is fine. Restaurants in tourist areas stay open, and evening iftar meals can be a lovely atmosphere. Some smaller local places may close during the day.
When is the cheapest time to go to Turkey?
Flights and hotels are usually cheapest from November to March, followed by April and late October. Peak prices hit July and August, especially on the coast. Prices in Turkey change often because of the lira, and many hotels quote in euros, so treat these as rough ranges per night for a mid-range double room:
| Season | Istanbul | Cappadocia (cave hotel) | Coast (Antalya, Fethiye, Bodrum) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter (Nov–Mar) | €50–110 | €50–120 | many places closed; €40–100 where open |
| Shoulder (Apr–May, Oct) | €70–150 | €80–180 | €60–140 |
| Early & late summer (Jun, Sep) | €80–170 | €90–200 | €90–200 |
| Peak (Jul–Aug) | €90–190 | €90–200 | €120–300+ |
You'll usually pay day-to-day costs in Turkish lira (TRY). Check current prices for your dates. For a full daily budget, see is Istanbul expensive?
Tips for planning your Turkey trip
- Don't try to do everything. Istanbul plus Cappadocia is a great first trip of 5–7 days. Add the coast only if you have more time.
- Fly between regions. Domestic flights to Kayseri or Nevşehir (for Cappadocia) and Antalya save long days on the road.
- Leave spare mornings in Cappadocia in case your balloon is cancelled.
- Check holiday dates before you book, and book early if they overlap with your trip.
- Dress modestly for mosques. Women should bring a scarf to cover their hair.
