The best time to visit Greece is late May, June or September. Month-by-month weather, sea temperature, crowds and prices for Athens and the islands.
The best time to visit Greece is late May to June and September to early October. The sea is warm enough to swim, the ferries run full schedules, and you avoid the worst of the July–August heat, crowds and prices. If you only care about beaches and nightlife, high summer works. If you want Athens and the ancient sites at a comfortable temperature, spring and autumn are better.
Greece is not one climate, though. Athens, the Cyclades (Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos), Crete, the Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia) and the mountains all behave a little differently. Here's how the year breaks down.
Best month to visit Greece: the short answer
- Best all-round: June and September. Long days, warm sea, everything open.
- Best for sightseeing in Athens: April, May and October. Cooler for walking up the Acropolis.
- Best for swimming: August and September, when the sea is at its warmest.
- Cheapest: November to March for Athens and the mainland. Many island hotels and restaurants close in winter, though.
- Avoid if you can: mid-July to late August, if you dislike heat, queues and peak prices.
Greece month by month
Spring (April–May)
Wildflowers, green hills and pleasant days for walking, often in the low-to-mid 20s °C by May. The sea is still cool in April, so most people won't swim yet, but it warms through May. Islands start waking up around Easter. Some smaller places open only in May.
Greek Orthodox Easter is the biggest celebration of the year, with candlelit midnight services, fireworks and family feasts. Its date moves each year and often differs from Western Easter. Expect domestic travel to be busy and some sites to keep shorter hours around the holiday.
Early summer (June)
For many travellers this is the sweet spot. The sea is swimmable, ferries run a full timetable, and crowds and prices haven't reached their peak. June has the longest days of the year, so you get late sunsets over the Santorini caldera.
High summer (July–August)
Hot, sunny and busy. Athens often goes well above 30 °C and can hit heatwave levels. During extreme heat, the Acropolis has closed in the middle of the day before, so plan sites for early morning. In the Cyclades the meltemi, a strong northerly wind, can make ferries rougher and beaches windy. Mid-August around the 15 August holiday (Assumption) is the busiest time of all, as Greek families head to the islands too.
Autumn (September–October)
September is arguably the best month to visit Greece. The sea is at its warmest, the summer crowds thin out after the first week or two, and prices start to drop. Greece in October is still warm in the south, especially Crete and Rhodes. Expect more rainy days later in the month and some island businesses closing from mid-October.
Winter (November–March)
Quiet, green and cheap, at least for Athens, Thessaloniki and the mainland. Winter is the best time for museums, city breaks and Meteora without the crowds. The mountains get snow and there are ski resorts. On the islands, ferry schedules are cut back and many hotels, beach bars and tavernas close until spring. Crete and the bigger islands stay more lively than small Cyclades islands.
When is the cheapest time to go to Greece?
Flights and hotels are usually cheapest from November to March, followed by April–May and October. Peak prices hit July and August, especially on Santorini and Mykonos. Approximate ranges per night for a double room:
| Season | Athens (mid-range) | Santorini / Mykonos (mid-range) |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Nov–Mar) | €50–100 | many places closed; €60–130 where open |
| Shoulder (Apr–May, Oct) | €70–140 | €100–220 |
| Early & late summer (Jun, Sep) | €90–170 | €150–350 |
| Peak (Jul–Aug) | €100–200 | €200–500+ |
Caldera-view rooms on Santorini can cost far more than this. Treat these as rough guides and check current prices for your dates. Day to day, a simple taverna meal often costs €12–25 per person, a gyros or souvlaki pita €3–6, and a ferry between islands anything from about €20 to €100+ depending on route and speed.
Best time to visit the Greek islands
- Santorini and Mykonos: June and September. Sunsets, open beach clubs and fewer cruise-ship crowds than in midsummer.
- Crete: May to October. It's the largest and most southern island, so the season is longest and it's good for hiking (the Samaria Gorge usually opens from spring to autumn; check dates).
- Ionian islands (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos): June and September. Greener and less windy than the Cyclades, with more rain outside summer.
- Rhodes: April to October, with warm, swimmable weather lasting late into the season.
Island hopping? Go in June or September, when ferries run often but aren't packed. Book high-speed routes early in summer.
Best time for Athens and the ancient sites
Visit Athens in spring or autumn. Walk up to the Acropolis right at opening time, then see the Acropolis Museum in the hotter part of the day. Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae and Meteora are much easier to enjoy outside the summer heat. Many archaeological sites have shorter winter hours, and some have free-entry days in the low season. Check the official ticketing site before you go.
Tips for planning your Greece trip
- Book summer ferries and island hotels early. June to September sells out on popular islands.
- Start sightseeing at opening time in summer and save beaches for the afternoon.
- Watch the wind forecast in July and August. Meltemi days can delay small boats.
- Pair Athens with one or two islands rather than five. Travel days eat into short trips.
- In shoulder season, check opening dates for island restaurants and boat trips.
