Best Time to Visit Portugal: Month-by-Month Guide 2026

23 October 2026 · 6 min read · Lisbon, Portugal

The best time to visit Portugal is April–June or September–October. Month-by-month weather, sea, crowds and prices for Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve.

The best time to visit Portugal is April to June and September to October. It's warm and sunny, the Atlantic is starting (or still) swimmable in the south, and you skip the July–August heat, crowds and peak prices. If you just want beach days in the Algarve, high summer works. For walking Lisbon's hills or exploring Porto and the Douro Valley, spring and autumn feel far better.

Portugal is small, but the weather changes a lot from north to south. Porto and the north are greener and rainier. Lisbon is in the middle. The Algarve is the sunniest and driest. Madeira and the Azores have their own island climates. Here's how the year works.

Best month to visit Portugal: the short answer

Portugal month by month

Spring (March–May)

March can still be showery, especially in Porto. By April and May, Lisbon is usually pleasant, often in the low-to-mid 20s °C, with wildflowers along the Algarve cliffs. It's ideal for hiking the Rota Vicentina on the southwest coast. The sea is still cold for most people, so think coastal walks rather than swimming. Easter week is busy with domestic travel, so book ahead.

Early summer (June)

June is the sweet spot for many travellers. Days are long, the Algarve is warming up and crowds haven't peaked. It's also festival month. Lisbon celebrates Santo António around 12–13 June, with grilled sardines and street parties in Alfama. Porto's São João, on the night of 23–24 June, is one of the biggest street parties in Europe. Hotels in both cities fill up fast on those dates.

High summer (July–August)

Hot, sunny and busy. Lisbon can go well above 30 °C, and inland areas like the Alentejo and Douro Valley can get much hotter during heatwaves. The coast is cooled by Atlantic breezes. Even in summer, the sea off Lisbon and Porto feels fresh. The Algarve is warmer and calmer, which is why it's packed in August, when much of Europe is also on holiday.

Autumn (September–October)

September is arguably the best month to visit Portugal. The sea in the Algarve is near its warmest, the summer crowds thin out and prices start to drop. It's also harvest season in the Douro Valley, usually from September into early October.

Portugal in October is still mild, especially in the south. You get warm days in Lisbon and the Algarve, but more rain in Porto and the north as the month goes on. October is also when the big-wave season starts at Nazaré, where giant swells hit Praia do Norte in autumn and winter. Big days depend on the forecast, so check before you go.

Winter (November–February)

Winter is quiet, green and good value. It's rarely freezing on the coast, but it's often wet, especially in Porto and the north. Many older Portuguese houses and guesthouses have no central heating, so pack layers. The Algarve gets more winter sunshine, and Madeira stays mild all year, which makes it a popular winter escape. Christmas lights and New Year's Eve in Lisbon and Porto bring a short price spike.

When is the cheapest time to go to Portugal?

Flights and hotels are usually cheapest from November to February, then March and late October. Prices peak in July and August, especially on the Algarve coast. Approximate ranges per night for a mid-range double room:

Season Lisbon Porto Algarve (e.g. Lagos)
Winter (Nov–Feb) €60–110 €50–95 €45–90
Spring (Mar–May) €80–150 €70–130 €60–120
Early & late summer (Jun, Sep) €100–180 €90–160 €100–200
Peak (Jul–Aug) €110–200 €90–170 €130–280+
Autumn (Oct) €90–160 €75–140 €70–140

These are rough guides. Festival nights, big concerts and events can push city prices much higher, so check current prices for your dates. Day to day, Portugal is still one of Western Europe's better-value countries. A pastel de nata often costs €1–2, an espresso (bica in Lisbon) around €1–1.50, and a set lunch (prato do dia) in a local tasca about €9–15.

Best time to visit the Algarve

Go from May to June or in September. The weather is beach-ready, boat trips to the Benagil caves and Ponta da Piedade run regularly, and towns like Lagos and Tavira feel lively without being packed. July and August have the warmest sea but also the busiest beaches. From November to March, many beach bars and some hotels close or cut back. But it's a lovely time for golf, cliff walks and quiet towns.

Best time for Lisbon and Porto

For Lisbon, spring and early autumn are perfect. Ride Tram 28 early before the queues build, and save the hot afternoons for the shade of a miradouro or a trip to Belém. Our Lisbon 3-day itinerary on a budget works well in any of these months.
