A 3 days in Dubai itinerary for first-timers: Burj Khalifa, old Dubai by abra, the souks, the beach and a desert evening, with cost ranges in AED.
This 3 days in Dubai itinerary is built for a first visit: day one in Downtown around the Burj Khalifa and the fountains, day two in old Dubai crossing the creek by abra to the souks, and day three on the coast with a beach morning and an evening in the desert. It groups sights by area, so you spend your time seeing the city rather than sitting in taxis.
Before you start: Dubai's weekend is Saturday and Sunday, and Friday midday is quieter around mosques. From roughly May to September it's very hot, so outdoor plans move to early morning and after sunset. During Ramadan, opening hours change. Check current hours and ticket rules before you go.
Is 3 days enough for Dubai?
Yes, for a first trip. Three days covers the big landmarks, the historic creek area, a beach and a desert evening. Dubai is spread out, so you won't see everything. A fourth day is easy to fill with a day trip to Abu Dhabi for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, or simply more pool and beach time.
Where to stay in Dubai for 3 days
- Downtown / Business Bay — walk to the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, metro nearby. Central for this plan, but usually pricier.
- Dubai Marina / JBR — beach, waterfront walks and lots of restaurants. Great if day three matters most to you, though it's further from old Dubai.
- Deira / Bur Dubai — the creek, the souks and often the best value. Older and busier, with good metro links.
Get a Nol card on day one. It works on the metro, trams, buses and water buses. Taxis and ride apps are easy too, and often worth it in the heat.
Day 1: Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa
- 09:00 — Dubai Frame. A giant picture frame with views of old Dubai on one side and the new skyline on the other. Book a slot ahead to skip the wait.
- 11:00 — Museum of the Future. The curved building with Arabic calligraphy is worth seeing even from outside. Tickets are timed and often sell out, so book early if you want to go in.
- 13:00 — Lunch in DIFC or near the museum, then rest through the hottest hours.
- 16:00 — Burj Khalifa, At the Top. Sunset slots are the most popular and cost more. A late afternoon slot gives you daylight views and an early start on the evening.
- 18:30 — Dubai Fountain. The shows run every evening in front of the Burj on the lake. Watching from the promenade is free.
- 19:30 — Dubai Mall and dinner. See the aquarium from the outside for free, then eat at one of the terrace restaurants facing the fountain.
Day 2: Old Dubai, the creek and the souks
- 08:30 — Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Narrow lanes, wind towers and small galleries and cafés. Go early, when it's cool and quiet.
- 10:00 — Al Shindagha. A short walk along the creek to the restored houses and the museum on the history of Dubai and the creek.
- 11:30 — Abra across Dubai Creek. The traditional wooden boats cross from Bur Dubai to Deira for a few dirhams, paid in cash. It's one of the best short rides in the city.
- 12:00 — Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira. Browse first and buy later, and bargain politely. Gold is sold by weight plus a making charge.
- 13:30 — Lunch at a simple Emirati, Iranian or Indian place in Deira. This is the best-value food area of the trip.
- 15:00 — Back to your hotel for a break, or the Etihad Museum if you want something indoors.
- 18:00 — Sunset walk along the creek, then dinner at Al Seef, the waterfront area with restored-style buildings and cafés.
Day 3: Beach, the Palm and the desert
- 08:30 — Kite Beach or Jumeirah Public Beach. Free, with clear water and the Burj Al Arab in view. Swim early before the sand gets hot.
- 11:00 — Jumeirah Mosque. One of the few mosques in Dubai that welcomes non-Muslim visitors on guided sessions. Dress modestly, and check tour days and times first.
- 12:30 — Souk Madinat Jumeirah. Covered lanes, canals and lunch with a Burj Al Arab view.
- 14:00 — The Palm. Ride the Palm Monorail to the Atlantis end, or go up to The View at The Palm for the full shape of the island.
- 15:30 — Desert evening. Most desert tours pick up mid-afternoon and include dunes, sunset, a camp dinner and the drive back. Pick a licensed operator and check what's included. Couples who prefer something calmer can ask for a dinner-only or stargazing option.
- 21:30 — Back in the city. If you still have energy, end with a stroll along The Walk at JBR or Dubai Marina.

Tips for a first trip to Dubai
- Go between November and March if you can. The weather is warm rather than scorching, which makes the creek, beaches and desert far more enjoyable.
- Dress modestly in souks, mosques and malls. Shoulders and knees covered is a safe rule outside beaches and pools.
- Plan around the heat. Outdoor sights early, indoor museums and malls at midday, waterfronts and desert after 4 pm.
- Book the timed tickets. The Burj Khalifa, Museum of the Future and Dubai Frame all work on time slots.
- Carry some cash for abras, souks and small cafés.
- Alcohol is only served in licensed venues, mostly hotels, and public drunkenness is taken seriously.
